Introduction to Ironmongery
Here at W. Burton and Sons whilst well known for our timber, agricultural and equine products we also manufacturer and stock an extensive range of ironmongery to complement our other products.
We have an extensive range of hinges, bolt, hooks, frames and latches always in stock. With so many options to choose its often difficult to understand what the best product is for you.
Let’s talk you through some of the products we have to offer to ensure you are providing not only a visual deterrent but a secure boundary for your property.
Firstly, all of our ironmongery is galvanised which means that they have a protected layer which stops items from corroding and rusting and are insoluble in rainwater and extremely hard wearing.
Tee Hinges
Available in Light, Medium or Heavy duty gauge. Tee Hinges are designed to evenly distribute the weight of a door or gate without putting extra strain on the hinge.
They are fairly easy to install, the rectangular plate attaches directly to the stationary post and then the tapered strap would fit to either the gate or door for extra security.
Simply position it in line with your gate or door and screw in place. Our tee hinges are available in light, medium and heavy duty gauges ranging from 100mm to 600mm.
Choosing the correct size is essential. A hinge too small will not give you enough stability. We also stand by the rule of your hinge should be at least the length of the gate or door you are hanging.
For any gates bigger than 2000mm we always recommend using a third heavy duty tee hinge for extra support.
Screws
It is also crucial that you use the correct screws to install your gate fittings. Standard screws with no surface coating will just rust or corrode when exposed to the outdoor elements.
We recommend using Spax Screws which are zinc coated for maximum durability. We have various sizes in stock to suit.
For instance we stock Spax Yellow screws in various lengths and sizes. A universal screw that can be used in multiple ways. The design removes the need for pre-drilling (except hardwoods), this also helps reduce the risk of the wood splitting when working close to surface edges. The design also allows for a quick, safe and secure fastening. The Spax Yellow range is designed with durability in mind, this along side their extremely high resistance against corrosion makes for the prefect woodscrew!
Butt Hinges
Butt hinges are mainly used on doors, for example, when hanging a door onto a cupboard. One side of the plate would be attached to the cupboard frame and the other to the door itself. The Butt hinge enables smooth opening and closing.
We stock these in 75mm and 100mm lengths.
Strap Hinges
Strap Hinges are typically used on bi folding gates and doors. Your original gate or door would still be hung using the tee hinges as mentioned earlier and then the strap hinges would be used to hang one gate/ door from another
Band & Hook Hinges
The Band and Hook hinge is a much bigger hinge than the tee hinge.
Thery comprise of 2 pieces. You have the rectangular hinge plate which attaches to the gate post, and the band which attaches to the gate itself. The hinge plate features a hook, and the band sits over this to secure it in place.
Unlike a Tee hinge which should be at least half the width of your gate. The size of your Band and Hook hinges only needs to be one third (1/3) of the gate width.
Same as the Tee hinge though, for gates over 2000mm, we recommend using a third Band and Hook hinge be added for extra strength.
We stock a range of Band and Hook hinges for all your gate fixing needs. From adjustable, straight and cranked.
Brenton Bolt
Brenton Bolt also known as a pad bolt. These can be used both internally and externally for securing doors and gates.
Can also be used with a padlock for extra security.
Available in sizes 100mm 150mm and 250mm
Cabin Hooks
Ideal for keeping door and gates in an open position. The small plate is attached to the stationary fixing i.e. wall.
